Solar Sunflower
One completed solar sunflower!
The plan is to construct three sunflowers just north of the Library. When all three are connected, they will generate electricity for the Library and serve as one of the educational componants of the Riverfront Energy Center. The Grand Rapids Area Library Foundation is raising money for all of the educational componants, including solar and wind energy generation, and a dashboard showing energy consumption and savings.

October 21-27 is Friends of the Library Week, so I will take this opportunity to say “Thank You” to our Friends group. The Friends of the Grand Rapids Area Library was established in 1979 as a not for profit organization and has raised thousands of dollars for the library to date. Currently many community members contribute annually to the Friends and many of these contributors actively volunteer their time to assist the group.
Fundraising efforts include the used bookstore in the lobby of the library and the sale of canvas book bags. The money raised by the Friends group enables our library to move from good to great -- providing the resources for additional programming, much needed equipment, and support for children’s summer reading. Our library would be much poorer without the Friends. The Friends also contributed to the Smart Play Spot recently installed in the Library, and to the Early Literacy Station full of educational games.
The work of the Friends highlights the fact that our library is the cornerstone of the community, providing opportunities for all to engage in the joy of life-long learning and connect with the thoughts and ideas of others from ages past to the present; The Friends understand the critical importance of well funded libraries and advocate to ensure that our library gets the resources it needs to provide a wide variety of services to all ages including access to print and electronic materials, along with expert assistance in research and children’s services.
Support the Friends
The Friends also maintain Bright Red Book Shelves at two locations for Project Read. If you have gently used books for toddlers or preschoolers, drop them off at the Library for placement on the bookshelves. Please stop by the library to learn more about the Friends' activities and find out how to become a member of the Friends.

This prize is given for the best novel of the year written by a citizen of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland. Minnesota History on Display at the Grand Rapids Library
We have an exhibit through the month of October about the Dakota – U.S. Conflict of 1862. Thanks to the Nicollet County Historical Society, we have a 12 panel display that chronicle the history of the conflict that took place in southern Minnesota during 1862. We also have books on display. Come to learn more about this often neglected chapter of Minnesota’s early history. Discussions of the Civil War will continue in November, and books are also available for background reading.

This is an opportunity for young and old to experience traditional folk music from around the world. A husband and wife duo introduces 30 different instruments, talking about the history of each and demonstrating the music it makes. These talented instrumentalists and vocalists play music from the British Isles to Medieval and Renaissance Europe, to the Americas and India capturing unique and unusual sounds of many time periods and cultures.

Ten-year old Gulistan and her younger brother Firat live happily with their parents in Diyarbakir, the heart of Turkish Kurdistan. Tragedy strikes when their mother and father are shot down by paramilitary gunmen before their eyes. Traumatised and orphaned, Gulistan, Firat and their infant sister are placed in the care of their young, politically-active aunt Yekbun who soon disappears without a trace. As days turn into weeks, the money that their aunt left them runs out. Eventually, the children have to fend for themselves on the streets, where one day, Gulistan is shocked to come across the murderer of her parents

Silviu, a young man who has spent years in a youth penitentiary, is granted release. Before he can leave, his mother returns to Romania to bring his little brother to Italy with her, despite Silviu's objections. He meets a young woman, Ana, who is working on a research project in the prison, and becomes interested in her. In his desperation Silviu resorts to violence, and Ana becomes his hostage
August 21: The Piano in a Factory (2010, China - Mandarin, 119 minutes)
Steelworker Chen has a passion for music and plays the accordion in a local band with a close group of friends. When his estranged wife returns one day after years of absence, she demands a divorce and sole custody of their daughter. Chen is at a loss. He doesn't mind divorcing a woman who has become a stranger, but he can't bear to part with his daughter. Chen has worked hard to give her a respectable life and has taught her his love of music. When asked if she'd rather stay with her father or go with her mother, the girl gives a practical, devastating answer: she'll go with whomever can provide her with a piano. Chen cannot afford such a luxury item, but the piano becomes his last hope to save what little is left of his family. With the help of his loyal friends and the support of his lover - the singer in his band - Chen concocts several plans to fulfill his daughter's wish

A Czech journalist joins a Prague radio station that broadcasts Nazi propaganda in order to protect his Jewish wife. However, as the Nazi rule over Czechoslovakia calls for more and more collaboration, his relationship with his wife spirals downward. http://www.reifcenter.org/
July 17 Vasermil (2007, Isreal - Hebrew, Amharic, Swahili, Russian, 93 Minutes)
The film is named after the local football stadium located in the town of Be'er Sheva in southern Israel. Vasermil tells the story of three teenagers who live in the same tough neighborhood, growing up in an unforgiving environment, pinning their hopes on football as a way out. Shlomi lives with his widowed mother, little sister, and step-father and works as a pizza delivery boy. Adiel, of Ethiopian descent, has to look after his young brother and sick mother. Dima, a new immigrant from Russia, has a father who is unemployed and a mother who works as a cleaning lady. New Interpretive Signs along Mississippi River
The Riverfront taskforce developed 3 signs for the walkway on the south side of the Mississippi River between the 7th Ave bridge and the Pokegama bridge.
Funding for the signs was contributed by the Grand Rapids Rotary and the Blandin Foundation.
The signs include information about the plants and animals along the river on one side of the sign, and about the history of this stretch of the river on the other side.
The signs are located:
- Near the sidewalk on Pokegama between the bridge and the Blandin Foundation
- Along the River Front trail at the East end of the Library
- Along the River Front trail near the 7th Ave Bridge.

Great resource for encouraging young readers
Start with a book is a website companion to Reading Rockets that uses books as a launching pad for exploration, converstation, and real world learning adventures. The free resources build on what young children already like - dinosaurs, building, animals, sports, superheroes and music - so that parents, camp counselors and other s can have fun and intersact meaningfully with children while helping to strengthen their reading skills. Print off a list of recommended books and head to the library. While you're here, be sure to sign up for the Summer Reading Program.

Grand Rapids Rotary provides Early Literacy Station to GR Library
The Early Literacy Station is a touch screen computer that allows children to access 50 educational programs organized under seven categories: music/art, reading, social studies/geography, writing/computer skills, math, science and reference. Familiar characters such as word bird and Dora the Explorer make frequent appearances.
Funding for the ELS was provided by the Grand Rapids Rotary club. Throughout its 77 year history in Grand Rapids, the Rotary club has funded numerous scholarships, Leadership Camps, and a myriad of community based projects. Children can select which activity they want to work on, or parents can help to select programs for their children by choosing a category and an appropriate age bracket. The Early Literacy Stations are also great for special needs children because they have a variety of activities at different levels.
The library has been focusing on promoting early literacy skills by providing preschool story times for children and their care-givers. Children can also sign up for the Library’s summer reading program and attend a variety of events this summer, including storytellers, music, magic shows and movies.

It's the 1st annual Teen Short Film Contest in collaboration with ICTV and The Reif Center! Teens are invited to make short films (up to 8 minutes in length) in two categories: "Open" and "Zombies Own the Night". Join Laurie on a journey though the music of the Greatest Generation. “Sentimental Journey,” “Dream a Little Dream” and “My Favorite Things” are just a few songs that will inspire audiences to smile and sing along during this 90-minute show.
The band will be playing in the Libary so audience members can enjoy a view of the river at sunset while listening!

With guided writing exercises, older children will explore the role of roots and landscape in identity. During Kevin Proescholdt's Importance of Wilderness program several mentions were made of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Scientific and Natural Areas. But what is an SNA and how can we located them?
Scientific and Natural Areas (SNAs): The MN DNR SNA program preserves natural features and rare resources of exceptional scientific and educational value. Timber harvesting is not allowed in SNAs. SNAs located in Itasca County include: Ladies Tresses Swamp, Lost "40", Wawina Peatland, Wabu Woods, South Piece, Botany Bog and Chisholm Point. Mr. Proescholdt has worked with Into the Wild author Jon Krakauer on environmental and wilderness issues. He is Spokesman for the Izaak Walton League and a national speaker on wilderness issues.

Community Organizations Contribute Literacy Station to Library
Thanks to donations from The Grand Rapids Area Library Foundation, the Friends of the Grand Rapids Area Library, The Grand Rapids Centennial Rotary Club and the Kiwanis Daybreakers Club of Grand Rapids, children can now use a Literacy Station to play while they learn at the Grand Rapids Area Library.
The literacy station looks different from the other game computers in the library, with brightly colored graphics on a touch screen, a multi-colored keyboard and a child-sized mouse. The station is loaded with dozens of games chosen for both their educational outcomes and their “fun” factor. Math, Reading, Science, Drawing, music and history programs are available, as well as popular favorites such as Oregon Trail and Dora’s World Adventure. All instructional content is aligned to national education standards and has received top ratings in professional journals.
One of the primary goals of the Library is to support parents in preparing their preschoolers for learning success, and to help primary students develop a love of reading and learning. The literacy station provides one more opportunity for kids to practice learning skills while having fun.

Museum Passes now available at Arrowhead Libraries
Museum passes available again beginning Monday, December 19
They’re back! Passes are now available at the Grand Rapids Library for a variety of popular attractions throughout the region. The process has changed based on experience from the first year. You will be able to check out passes good through Feb 28 and good at all of the participating museums.

Judy Garland & Children’s Museum,
MN Discovery Center,
Split Rock Lighthouse Historic Site,
Dorothy Molter Museum,
North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum,

Carlton County Historical Society,
Palkie Grist Mill
Cook County Historical Society
Some of these are seasonal, so they will not be open in winter.
Due to limited quantities, we must restrict it to 4 passes per family per quarter.

Beginning construction on energy building at Library
The digging began on June 24 in preparation for construction of a small building to house heat transfer equipment which will extract heat from the waste water discharged from the paper mill and use the heat in the Library's heating system. The work is expected to be completed by November 1.

Finches like libraries too!
Two finches stopped by the Grand Rapids Area Library today and rested on the window sill while watching the activity inside. Perhaps they wanted to sign up for the summer reading program. We have programs for all ages, including:

Novel Destinations
Our adult summer reading program. Pick up a book bingo card and expand your reading horizons! Read something you would not otherwise read. If you are in a book group and would like a Library staff person to do a short talk on free downloadable ebooks and audiobooks available from the library, let us know!

Our teen summer reading program Read a book, complete a review and enter a drawing each week for fun prizes! Our 2nd Annual Teen Photo Contest begins this week also. Teens can submit photos until July 23rd. Stop at the reference desk for a submission form.
One World Many Stories
Kids (ages 0-14) can sign up for our summer reading program, pick up a reading log, and keep track of their reading. Bring back the completed log and get a free book to keep! Children under age 5 completing the summer reading program are eligible for Baby Steps Coupons.

The Grand Rapids Area Library just received some last minute tickets to area attractions.
These tickets must be used by June 13:
Judy Garland/Children’s Museum
Minnesota Discovery Center
Great Lakes Aquarium
Historic Union Depot (Duluth)
Split rock Lighthouse
Lake County Historical Society (Two Harbors)
Bring in your Arrowhead Library System card to pick up the tickets. The supply is limited, so hurry in! As long as you're stopping by, pick up a calendar of events and activities for the summer!
These passes have been funded with money from the sales tax which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota’s arts and cultural heritage. The Legislature did not pass a bill to distribute these funds, so funding for future programs is in limbo.

Use your tickets!
If you picked up a ticket at the Library to visit a local museum, historical society or other attraction in the region, use it this weekend! Most tickets expire May 30. Check the back of the ticket for an expiration date.
Note: The museum pass program has been funded through the Arts and Cultural Legacy funding. (remember the small addition to the sales tax?) A bill reauthorizing funding for Arts, Environment and Clean Water was not passed by the Legislature before they adjourned, so funding is in limbo for now.

Library Carpet: west half is done!
The carpet layers just finished laying carpet in the west half of the Grand Rapids Library. 
It needs to sit for a few days before the heavy stacks are moved back onto it. The movers will come back on Monday to move everything from the east end to the west end, then the ripping and grinding will begin again!

Progress on Library Floor
Carpet is being laid this week on the first half of the floor at the Grand Rapids Library, after the concrete was resurfaced. The movers will be back next week to move everything to the completed half, and the process will begin again on the second half. We should be moving back in during the last week of April.
In the meantime, we are open for limited hours with limited services Monday - Friday from 12:30 - 5:30, and Saturday 10 - 2. We have computers available, a small collection of children's and adult's materials for check out and newspapers and magazines. You can pick up material requested in advance. Thanks for your patience!.

Grand Rapids Library Begins Re-carpet project
Movers came on Monday morning to begin moving furniture and stacks in preparation for re-carpeting the

Arrowhead Library Catalog Restored
After being down all of Wednesday and Thursday, the Arrowhead Library catalog is back up! You can now search for books, renew your books, and download audiobooks and ebooks. You can also request books. Thanks for your patience!

Author Visit: Kao Kalia Yang- The Late Homecomer
Author visit
Ms Yang will talk about her story on Thursday, March 17 at 7 pm at the Library. Born in Thailand’s Ban Vinai Refugeee Camp in 1980, Kao Kalia Yang immigrated to St. Paul with her family in 1987. A graduate of Carleton College and Columbia University, Yang, together with her sister, is the founder of Words Wanted, an agency dedicated to helping immigrants with writing, translating and business services. “The Latehomecomer” is her first book. Winter Reading Programs
Teen Winter Reading 2011 is here!
It runs until-February 28. Teens (age 12-18) can read books or graphic novels and keep track of pages read each day. Log sheets can be picked up in the library or online at www.grandrapids.lib.mn.us/teens.htm After reading 700 pages, bring in the log sheet and pick a free book. Once 1500 pages have been read, stop back in with the log sheet and pick up a Target gift card. On Monday, January 24 from 1pm-3pm celebrate no school by playing a Wii game at the library.

Friday January 21 is an early release day for District 318 but there is a fantastic event planned for the Middle School beginning at 1:00 pm. Science explosion! will feature natural sciences, lego robotics, physical sciences and lots of interactive opportunities. There will be demonstrations, displays, exhibits, hands on activities, and fun things to do, watch and explore. This is a Children First! event organized by staff of Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital any many volunteers

The Children’s Library offers dozens of great titles for science experiments and everyday science fun! Stop by before the science explosion, or afterwards to explore more science
. Science Wizardry for Kids by Margaret Kenda and Phyllis S. Williams contains a multitude of science experiments which help teach principles of physics, meteorology, chemistry, astronomy, geology and more. Large print and great pictures encourage a lot of exploratory fun! Check out this book and many more in the “Science Experiment” Dewey number 507.8!
You can also find information about specific areas of science. Light, Sound & Electricity by Kirsteen Rogers is a great example of such a book. This book also includes internet sites you may want to visit to learn more!
Don’t miss the “Cool Science” series! Titles in this series include Cool Spy Supplies, Cool Sensory Suspense, Cool Odor Decoders, Cool Gravity Activities, Cool Dry Ice Devices, and Cool Distance Assistant. Lots of fun science projects for a lotta fun (and a little learning!)

The database has many articles from periodicals, reference books, and many pictures. Additional Science resources can be found in Kids Infobits, the Virtual Reference Library, and the Infotrac databases. These databases are accessible from the Library's web site www.grandrapids.lib.mn.us under the "Online Resources" button, or by going to the Electronic Library for Minnesota page at www.elm4you.org.
